Conservative Approach Option

Conservative Approach

In patients with less severe vein problems we will sometimes recommend a conservative approach to treatment. Compression stockings and leg elevation are examples of conservative approaches to the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. Compression stockings are important because they have a higher compression than regular support hose. They are available by prescription only.

Leg elevation: Sounds simple but many times people think they are elevating their legs and they're really not. Correct leg elevation involves elevating the feet above the heart.

AVOID:

  • Excessive sun exposure. Use sunscreen. (Always important, but especially important in limiting facial spider vein formation).
  • Excessive body weight.
  • Crossing your legs when sitting.
  • Standing for long periods of time, (especially without wearing compression stockings).

INCLUDE:

  • Exercise. Exercise improves your circulation and exercise that targets your legs, like walking or running, is especially effective.
  • Do try to elevate your legs above your heart when resting.
