Are You At Risk?

IT MAY BE MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK
Up to 60% of all Americans suffer from a vein disorder such as spider veins or varicose veins.

The cause of spider veins is uncertain, but factors that weaken vein valves include aging, obesity, leg injury, and prolonged standing. Spider veins on the face of a fair-skinned person can occur from exposure to the sun are unattractive and can be painlessly treated.

Varicose veins often cause discomfort and look unattractive. varicose veins, left untreated, usually enlarge and worsen over time. They can cause the legs and feet to swell. Leg muscles may feel fatigued or throb and cramp at night. The skin at or around the spider veins or varicose veins can itch or burn, and can lead to more serious problems.

WHEN TO SEEK TREATMENT

In some patients, spider veins and varicose veins do not cause discomfort. Treatment would focus on improving the appearance of the leg. However, it is important to know that spider veins and varicose veins can be painful. If left untreated, leg swelling is a common problem. In the later stages of severe vein reflux, patients can experience bleeding, darkening of the skin (hyper-pigmentation), and even ulceration of the skin.

MEDICAL TREATMENT
The first step is identifying bad habits that can lead to increased venous pressure. If your job involves long periods of sitting or standing, find time to walk around every hour. Avoid crossing your legs when sitting. High heels do not allow the calf muscle to function well, so avoid wearing them to work. When possible, elevate your legs; at night, leg elevation will help with mild leg swelling. Proper compression stockings are the the best form of medical management. The external compression not only helps with leg pain and swelling, but also prevents progressive vein dilation. If you do not have a history of stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal illness, 81mg of aspirin is particularly helpful when embarking on long airline flights or automobile trips. If you are pregnant, try to sleep on your left side; this decreases the compression of pelvic veins by the uterus and fetus. Walking every day or some other form of exercise is the best way to prevent varicose veins from worsening. Finally, adhering to the American Heart Association guideline of 5-7 servings of un-cooked fruits and vegetables each day is a better form of nutritional therapy than the oral supplements available.
