Kate graduated from Piedmont Nursing School in 1977. Her career since that time has been varied and has included intensive care nursing, a stint as a cruise ship nurse as well as many years working in open heart surgery both as a nurse and as a first assistant in the operating room. She also has done free-lance surgical assisting.
